SYMBOLS & STORIES

EARTH The earth our home. It is home to each one of us and all of us together. It is circular and all-encompassing. Ironically it was science which changed the shape in western imaginations from square to round. The planet is simply a piece of rock floating in space but it is very much alive and fertile. We belong to it. To seperate from earth means to seperate from our body. We are not above earth, we are on it and all of it is within us. We must observe the laws of nature and be humble, gracious and protective. Earth is 4.5 billion years old. We must respect our elders.

EK ONG KAR is represented here in the ancient Gurmuki language. Ek Ong Kar means “There is one God that created all of creation”. Historically these were the first three words spoken by Guru Nanak, a saintly man of universal consciousness, after he came out of a state of Samadhi (one-ness with the universe and creation) for three days. His words became the Japji and Ek Ong Kar makes up the first line of this sacred text. Guru Nanak delivered to the world universal teachings that are available to anyone regardless of race, creed, religion, cast, or social status.

HEART The heart a universal symbol. It is the symbol of Love in all its forms including compassion. When one lives from the heart then one is living life and living in truth. When one acts from the heart then one is acting from Godliness. The word YES within the heart denotes openess and affirmation of the positive. Nothing is impossible and everything is possible. The end punctuation (“ . ”) emphasises the certainty and infinite nature of this word.

LOTUS (PADMA) The lotus symbol (or its petals) is both a symbol of purity and variety, every lotus petal representing a distinct aspect. The lotus in a YANTRA represents freedom from multiple interference with the exterior (purity) and expresses the absolute force of the Supreme Self. Lotuses are symbols of purity and 'spontaneous' generation and hence symbolize divine birth. According to the Lalitavistara, 'the spirit of the best of men is spotless, like the new lotus in the [muddy] water which does not adhere to it', and, according to esoteric Buddhism, the heart of the beings is like an unopened lotus: when the virtues of the Buddha develop therein the lotus blossoms. This is why the Buddha sits on a lotus in bloom. In Tantrism, it is the symbol of the feminine principle. The white lotus symbolizes Bodhi, the state of total mental purity and spiritual perfection, and the pacification of our nature. It generally has eight petals corresponding to the Noble Eightfold Path of the Good Law. It is the lotus found at the heart of the Garbhadhatu Mandala, being the womb or embryo of the world. It is characteristic of the esoteric sects, and the lotus of the Buddhas.

OM (AUM) This is an ancient Sanksrit symbol. Before the beginning, the Brahman (absolute reality) was one and non-dual. It thought, "I am only one -- may I become many." This caused a vibration which eventually became sound, and this sound was Om. Creation itself was set in motion by the vibration of Om. The vibration produced by chanting Om in the physical universe corresponds to the original vibration that first arose at the time of creation. The sound of Om is also called Pranava, meaning that it sustains life and runs through Prana or breath. Om also represents the four states of the Supreme Being. The three sounds in Om (AUM) represent the waking, dream and deep sleep states and the silence which surrounds Om represents the "Turiya" state. Just as the sound of Om represents the four states of Brahman, the symbol Om written in Sanskrit also represents everything. The material world of the waking state is symbolized by the large lower curve. The deep sleep state is represented by the upper left curve. The dream state, lying between the waking state below and the deep sleep state above, emanates from the confluence of the two. The point and semicircle are separate from the rest and rule the whole. The point represents the turiya state of absolute consciousness. The open semicircle is symbolic of the infinite and the fact that the meaning of the point can not be grasped if one limits oneself to finite thinking.

PEACE This is one of the most widely known symbols in the world. In Britain it is recognised as standing for nuclear disarmament – and in particular as the logo of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). In the United States and much of the rest of the world it is known more broadly as the peace symbol. It was designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a professional designer and artist and a graduate of the Royal College of Arts. He showed his preliminary sketches to a small group of people in the Peace News office in North London and to the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War, one of several smaller organisations that came together to set up CND. The first public appearance was in the first major anti-nuclear march, from London to Aldermaston, where British nuclear weapons were and still are manufactured. It was on that march, over the 1958 Easter weekend that the symbol first appeared in public. Gerald Holtom, a conscientious objector who had worked on a farm in Norfolk during the Second World War, explained that the symbol incorporated the semaphore letters N(uclear) and D(isarmament). He later wrote to Hugh Brock, editor of Peace News, explaining the genesis of his idea in greater, more personal depth: “I was in despair. Deep despair. I drew myself: the representative of an individual in despair, with hands palm outstretched outwards and downwards in the manner of Goya’s peasant before the firing squad. I formalised the drawing into a line and put a circle round it.” Eric Austin added his own interpretation of the design: the gesture of despair had long been associated with the death of Man and the circle with the unborn child.

Healthy, Happy and Wholly RAW This is not a symbol but a statement. The new "trend" in eating, raw foods, is not a trend but an ancient way of sustainance which we have lost contact with—just as we have lost contact with our true spiritual nature (in that we are spiritual beings have a human experience). Eating raw and organic foods promotes life, abundance and peace on this planet, not only within yourself but for all that which is connected to you great and small. For many a raw diet will understandably take some transition time but for those who wish to pursue it you will find your connection to your body, life, spirit and peace deepen.
